What would an online estimator actually be worth to you?

Put in the leads you get now, how many you close, and what a customer is worth. You will see what changes if more of the people already visiting your site get a price instead of leaving.

Most home service websites convert somewhere between one and three percent of visitors. The rest leave without asking, and the single most common reason is that they could not find out what anything costs. This works out what recovering some of them would be worth in your business, using your numbers rather than ours.

How this is worked out

No black box. The whole calculation is four steps.

StepWhat it does
1. Your leads todayThe weekly figure you set, multiplied by 52.
2. Your leads with an estimatorThe same figure multiplied by three at the low end and five at the high end. This is the assumption doing the heavy lifting — see below.
3. Your closed dealsLeads multiplied by the close rate you set. The calculator assumes you close at the same rate you do now.
4. Your revenueClosed deals multiplied by the customer value you entered.

Where the three to five times comes from

It is the range the calculator assumes, and it is worth being straight about what that means. Your own result depends on things no calculator can know: how much traffic your website already gets, where the estimator sits once it is on there, and how quickly you follow up on what it sends you. A business with a thousand visitors a month and a fast phone will see something very different from one with a hundred visitors and a Monday-morning callback habit.

Read the output as a model, not a forecast. It shows what the change is worth if it works in your business at that rate. The honest way to use it is to move the multiplier assumption down in your head, see whether the number still justifies the effort, and go from there.

The part the calculator cannot show you

Lead volume is the easy thing to model, so it is the thing every calculator models. Two effects matter as much and are harder to put a number on.

  • The leads arrive warmer. Someone who has already seen your price range and carried on anyway has pre-qualified themselves. Your close rate on those is usually better than on a form fill from someone who was only ever price-checking, which means step 3 above is probably conservative.
  • You waste less time. The enquiries you would have quoted for and lost on price mostly stop arriving. That does not show up as revenue, but it shows up in your week.
